Vacuum & Fixture Heat Treating

Vacuum and Fixture Heat Treating

Orbel offers both vacuum (bulk heat treat) and fixture heat treating for customers' precision metal designs.

Our capabilities are concentrated on processing Beryllium Copper alloy 25 material and include economical bulk heat treating for general applications and specialized fixtures for precision spring designs.

Our heat treating process is designed to maximize the mechanical properties of Beryllium Copper alloy 25 material and create optimal spring characteristics. Beryllium Copper alloy is an excellent material for spring applications requiring good conductivity, accuracy, strength, and stability. Beryllium Copper springs are stable and maintain their position and spring force over a wide range of temperature and stress.

Prior to heat treating the material is soft and easily formed. Heat treating the alloy 25 material enhances the spring quality allowing the material to return to form through the life cycle of the part. The hardness of the finished material in DPH (diamond pyramid hardness) is dependent on the hardness of the material from the mill.

Material properties of Beryllium Copper include:

  • Precipitation hardening of Beryllium Copper at elevated temperature increases strength and reduces stress from the forming process
  • Hardness from 325 DPH minimum for 1/4 Hd (Hardness Depth) to 353 DPH minimum for full Hd
  • Yield strength as high as 180 KSI and Tensile strengths to 210 KSI

Advantages of Orbel's heat treating process:

  • In house fixture design, building and maintenance allows complete control of the process, quality, and delivery time
  • Quality control process includes hardness testing in DPH to uniform runs
  • All heat treated batches are quality tested for hardness and adherence to specifications
  • Large volume vacuum furnace reduces costs while allowing the material to reach peak performance in large quantity runs
  • Fixture heat treating capabilities produce dependable parts with consistent strength, stability, and shape
